from injured reserve by the New England Patriots.

The veteran cornerback was placed on the IR before the first roster cut deadline of 85 players.

That move essentially eliminated any chances of him suiting up in Patriots uniforms for the 2022 season.

As per the rule, players placed on the IR prior to the 53-man roster cut cannot play until the next season.

Patriots have released Butler, he is free to sign wherever he pleases

assuming he is healthy, he will be eligible to return for the new team at some point.

The move could indicate that Butler’s actual injury may not necessarily end the season.

Making up for Butler in a 53-man roster with a fierce training camp fight in the defensive backfield was always going to be a long shot.

Butler will always hold a special place in the hearts of Patriots fans
