The federal government will provide some assistance to nearly 1.6 million Americans

 those who file their taxes late are subject to penalty fees of 5% per month,

up to 25%, of their total taxes owed for the year.

The IRS decided to waive these fees, with the nearly 1.6 million Americans who filed late set .

to receive more than $1.2 billion in refunds, representing roughly $750 per person
