The federal government will provide some assistance to nearly 1.6 million Americans

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) declared on Wednesday that late filers of 2019 or 2020 tax returns will receive relief from penalties.

and provide relief to people in many different ways throughout the pandemic."

Those who have already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns and paid their late fees will be automatically refunded,

those who have filed, but haven’t yet paid the fees, will have them erased.

By the end of September, the majority of the refunds should be received.

Individuals who still have not filed these returns can qualify for the penalty relief,

but in order to qualify, they must file their 2019 and 2020 returns by Sept. 30, 2022.

There is no need to call in order for individuals or businesses who qualify to receive this penalty relief, according to Rettig.
